They're political aristocrats, what did you expect? They do anything to promote themselves to a certain group of people, even if it deeply upsets another. In this case, they're trying to get the rich people on their side, which would be the best way tbh. If they got the rich guys with them, then there would be this big "vote for this guy and I give you money" thing going on. It's what I would do if I was running for office (though less bluntly to appease both sides)

Also yea, the fact that "mass" shootings (according to reddit) are becoming daily isn't a very good American trait
