Author Topic: Is it normal to feel "empty" inside?  (Read 4732 times)

I think what the OP needs is to think about three things:

-What he sees himself becoming in the next ten years from now
-Setting goals
-Picking up numerous books at his local library and just browsing through various different types of informational books, and just trying to get an idea of what he might have some interest in

talent is overrated. learn a programming language and get to work
if you like what you're doing, patience should be irrelevant
I guess idk what to tell you about ambition, but if you ever find yourself with free time, you could just work on whatever, even if it's only because you have nothing better to do

I think that talent is underrated, talent is what keeps us going. For example, if a person is gifted musically -- that talent will help that individual create goals.

I don't think every problem we face requires a mental health professional or doctor, I think some things we're capable of handling using our minds. The OP has already stated that he has little interests, that has absolutely zero to do with depression. It's just that he has no interests (beside video games).
Actually having little interests in things is a major part of depression, also the op stated that he feels emptiness in his chest thats depression right there baby

setting little goals to accomplish and giving yourself little rewards is a great way to help. Surrounding yourself with good friends is also a plus. I'm trying to remember the other things we talked about in psychology.

oh, exercise is just as effective for helping depression as anti-depressants. It releases the same chemical that helps balance your emotions. So try and take up a regular exercising regimen. Best of luck to you, hope it subsides quickly!

While i agree, there may be people in here who know what they're talking about and can help. We're not diagnosing specifically, we're merely saying that's what it sounds like and should talk to a therapist to confirm.

there are people here experienced with this situation I agree, but we're not a therapy team.

I am studying to become a counselor/psychologist/therapist so. I'm only saying it sounds like a case of depression and he should at least talk to his doctor or someone about it. With these kinds of things, waiting it out can be potentially dangerous as they can escalate quickly and suddenly

I feel like I'm in the minority on this, but yes. Not necessarily the minority on 'yes' or 'no,' but the minority on the 'why' of it.

In today's society it's becoming way too easy to waste your life. You can sit around, watch youtube videos and browse the internet, and basically just survive as long as you go to some boring grind of a job everyday or even just take up some welfare depending on your situation.

Anybody in that situation would feel empty. That's why it helps to be productive somehow. Whether it's self-improvement, making something creatively, teaching yourself some topic or skill, help people, do something. And it sucks because a lot of time it just feels like work, but that's what it is a lot of the time. You need to exercise some discipline occasionally if you want to feel real satisfaction in what you're doing.

Even then though, a lot of people can feel really empty. Sometimes it can be a result of clinical depression, loneliness, or other miscellaneous feelings and conditions. Personally, I've invested a lot of my life into focusing on God, so I'd be inclined to think that a lot of people might feel empty because I doubt one can truly live life to the fullest without a relationship with God. But that's just my belief. Needless to say, 95% of the internet would disagree with me on that.

talent is overrated.
So. Much. This.

There's a lot of talented people I know, but they're going to go absolutely nowhere because they lack discipline. They're apathetic. They rely on motivation to do stuff and get things done. Anyone who trains themselves to have discipline can go above and beyond anything that someone with natural talent can do if that person doesn't work just as hard.

I deal with this stuff constantly so I could perhaps be of some assistance. You said you don't feel like anything is currently bothering you. Think deep, do you feel like something is missing? Do you want something you don't have. If you can't think of anything, perhaps you've become bored of the things you do day to day, even if you don't realize it. Maybe that's why you lack the ambition to do anything, because it doesn't give you any satisfaction?

You said you are about to graduate. Perhaps though you are excited to get out there, you are scared about where to start? This could cause hesitation to want to do anything, because you are afraid of the changes? The tricky part about depression is it can be caused by anything or nothing at all. These are just a few suggestions to consider.

Can people stop spewing this bullstuff? Honestly. You have no idea what experiences people on this forum go through and what they can relate to. No harm comes from asking for advice from people you are used to talking to. Somebody here could be experiencing the exact same thing and could be able to help. In any medical thread their always has to be that one person who says "this is just some block building forum!" Why does that mean everybody is completely useless? I'm a full time EMT for an ambulance company covering 7 regions, does my experience not matter because we are on a "forum for a block game?" Hell, some forumers may be psychology majors. Think before you deem everyone useless for the forum we are on.

Methinks he's being a bit misunderstood. I don't think he was completely disregarding what the others are saying- just reminding OP not to take what everyone's saying as sure-fact that he has depression.

That being said, I'd lean towards Superslayer. If you think this is a serious issue, don't wait because it could worsen. But still, don't do it purely just because people told you that you have depression. If it sounds like something you have based on what they said, then sure, go do something about it.

Could be a simple hormone trough, if so you'll be fine tomorrow.
It would be a good idea to spend more time outdoors and exercising as well.

whoa there even i already said it sounded like depression
people are starting to kind of force it so i thought i would say that
if someone is going to actually say they are a qualified professional then sure they can take a crack at it
