Author Topic: So I totally forgeted up in my math final.  (Read 2242 times)

And I'll probably be given a second chance.

How the forget do you factorize this?
6x5-120x4-15x3+300x2+9x-180

I ended up with this but I forgot how to continue. The stupidest thematic of the year and I can't solve it.

6x4(x-20)-15x2(x-20)+9(x-20)

It's just a simple mathematics.
Got 70% in my maths test, it was ok.

Me too
I get my grades tomorrow so I'll see.
Probably less than 50%

6x4(x-20)-15x2(x-20)+9(x-20)

Ehhh....I think that's good so far. Tbh I never had to do more than four terms when it came to factoring through high school, so let me give a shot at what I THINK is right.

(6x^4 - 15x^2 + 9)(x-20)

factor 3 out of the first expression:

2x4 - 5x2 + 3

Actually.....are you sure that it was "minus 9"? If not, then we can't just do simple factoring out of it, so I'll continue as if it's a "minus 9".

2x4 - 5x2 - 3

(2x2+1)(x2-3)

Tack on the (x-20) and leave it like this:

(2x2+1)(x2-3)(x-20)

It's been a while since I've factored by grouping. I just found out that I managed to pass Calculus I with a C which I'm not happy about, but I got an A in every single one of my other classes.

6x4(x-20)-15x2(x-20)+9(x-20)
you factor out the (x-20)
(x-20)(6x4-15x2+9)
and then i guess just brute force the right part and do polynomial division to get the roots of -1 and 1 and get 6x2-9
6x2=9
x2=9/6=3/2
x=+-sqrt(3/2)

It was +9. I wrote the equation down on the table and took a photo of it. 100% certain it was +9.

(x-20)(6x4-15x2+9)

Actually this here makes more sense. I forgot about division.

How does the final exam system work for you guys?

I always disliked that it punishes individuals with higher grades and rewards those with lower.
If someone has a 94% in a class and gets a B on the final, their grade could drop to a B+ or A-. However, those with lower grades get the opposite reward for getting even mediocre grades. If one were to have a 65% in the class and get an 80%, they could go up to a C.

I think the formula for a final exam worth 20% of your grade would be (Current Grade) (.8) + (Exam Grade) (.2)

That's how it is for me.

Final Grade = Exam Worth × Exam Score + (1 – Exam Worth) × Current Grade

It depends on how the school's policy of final exams are.  At my university, typically the final exam for your major's required classes are 20% or higher of the final grade, where as gen eds are under that.  My two major's classes were 30% each.  It does tend to favor those who need a saving grace to pass but if you're the type of person who has a consistently high grade it shouldn't be much of a worry to achieve a high final exam grade.

Finals in Argentina must be passed by the students for them to pass the year. It includes EVERY THEMATIC studied through the year.
There's one makeup test. Fail that and you need to retake it in February. Fail that and you need to retake the entire subject during the winter holidays of the following year. You can have a maximum of two subjects to retake during the winter. More than two and you repeat the year and some schools kick you out.

All of the grading policies in my classes are laid out and weighted differently, but finals are required to be 25% of the grade.

My rule of thumb for guessing who will pass a math final is whether they know how to calculate their final grade without using one of those dumb calculators.

I'm a senior and after all these years of being a sweaty try hard, I lost my 4.0 gpa yesterday on my calculus final by 3%

Rip in peace
