Author Topic: Orwellian US vs Continental EU - What if?  (Read 1033 times)

Hey, since we're "celebrating" the passing of CISA, here's the scenario:

It's the near future (around the 2030s, military technology hasn't advanced too much) and the United States becomes increasingly fond of surveillance and oppression. Corruption spreads among the ranks. However, their military is still very patriotic and obedient, and the economy hasn't tanked. Europe remains much as it is today, staying democratic and liberal. The United Kingdom and Scandinavia are still wary of full EU integration, however, and the euro has all but disintegrated. Their combined GDP is still above that of the US, as it is today.

Then, relations sour between the US and continental EU due to the huge difference in ideology (the EU thinks the US is an evil dictatorship, the US thinks the EU are just soft commies) and a Cold War breaks out. Former NATO allies are forced to pick sides. What are the responses of the UK, Scandinavia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, et cetera? What about non-Western powers, like Russia or China?

Finally, relations dip beyond the point of (possibly nuclear!) war. What event finally sparks the war - and how does it play out?

Also, I might do one of these using this thread once in a while.

Scenario 1: Orwellian US vs Continental EU

russia or china pisses on the united states somehow

the radiated flattened landscape formerly known as north korea takes no part in the war

Staying "Democratic and Liberal", do those words somehow spell out "free" to you or something? lol.

no
you can be democratic and conservative
europe just happens to be democratic and liberal

i dont see any government being any more free than a liberal and democratic government, especially a full democracy

what do you suggest, we have no government at all?  that is true freedom, after-all

The UK might align itself with the US honestly
Whether or not they do, the rest of the Commonwealth would go with the UK. Japan and SK would go with the US, too.
Russia would be against the EU but not necessarily aligned with the US. Likewise, China would be anti-US but not with the EU. Scandinavia would probably stay neutral as always, but with an obvious leaning towards the EU.

We could make an RP for this

okay i call scandinavia if you guys are gonna do that

okay i call scandinavia if you guys are gonna do that
scandinavia's a region not a country ;)
i just meant that politically they're something of a group, despite the fact that denmark is in EU and NATO, norway in just NATO, sweden in just the EU, and finland in neither

okay i'll be norway then because potatoes

UK and US would definitely tag team

canada becomes a totalitarian police state with the latest in military technology and still doesn't get involved in the fighting

What if?

Answer: The Fallout canon becomes nonfiction.
