I thought quake live was free.
it use to be yeah, i assume the subscriptions weren't paying enough or something.
they dropped linux support too wayy back
the sale price is p much the highest i would've paid for it considering... nothing has really changed from quake 3. they've just modernized the UI, merged Team Arena into the game, and added some extra visual effects.
quake 3 doesn't have hardly any of a playerbase anymore, you'd essentially be paying $1.99 for multiplayer that's not dead.
