Author Topic: New co-op thingy  (Read 2027 times)

Hi; I'm new around here, but I have an idea I think you guys might like. What we need is a server with a great connection to host a game on Slate. Then, starting with the host, everyone co-operatively builds a skyscraper- one level at a time. Every layer is built by a different person, and can be as different from the others as possible, and can contain anything from mini games to dioramas to non-sequitors. For instance; level one is a lobby, with couches, a table, desks. Level two is a segment of castle wall built directly above it. Level three could be an alligator eating the pillars that hold the next layer up. Level four could be a head.
I would suggest that each level be 23 baseplates thick and 48 studs square, giving a good amount of room for both  vertical objects and floorspace without being to sprawling. (of course, anyone could have another layer later on, or have things sticking out of the edge...
If you are curious, I got the idea a while ago from a collaborative pixel-art project on one of those big forums. There are some other considerations, such as how to let people travel up and down this thing, but I feel that this could be big. I can host this some wendsdays between 12:00 and 6:00, sometimes. All the other time, I have no internet other than cellular modem... wahhhhh. Otherwise, I would have already hosted this thing. Anyone have better times/connections? Anyone interested in adding a level or two? Has this already been done?

So its like the pixel block tower in 3D. Sounds neat.

I'd like this. Of course, you get the noobs who try to make a jeep on their floor, but that can be dealt with.

Main problem would be the the user trust for such a thing, unless a system that saves and reloads all of the bricks every hour so they become the default server bricks.

I like the idea but I see allot of problems.

Perhaps; This would probably need to have a good admin checking on it every so often. As long as all the builders are good neighbors, then this will go pretty well; besides, if your level interferes with someone else's level, then both of them look worse...

But does anybody know a good way to host this? I would host it myself, but I can't.
Or can I?...
I have server space on Bluehost- I wonder if they will let me run a dedicated off of that. I probably can't, so if anybody has T1 and a spare server out there, you get a free level! Or perhaps a  :cookie:?

this sort of reminds me of the long cat thread (which was very popular at the time) where people drew a section of the "cat". This would be a good idea, as long as no one ruins the tower by making a horrible section!

I got a good connection for now- I'll keep the game running overnight if anyone wants to try it out. Look for the "Click Tower Game." See you guys soon!

P.S. Thanks Lt. Vic!

OK! So; the trial run was a success. We got some ideas for a real game here. Some problems:
-It is too easy to change other player's levels.
-possible to build levels that hog CPU cycles
-and minigames that start to interrupt construction.

I am a newb at hosting, so is there a way to fix this?
The next time I try this, I will include a skeleton structure so Build Ps can be simplified and players can build in tandem.

Also; what mods are necessary and what should I leave out so anybody can hop in?

finally; how can I do all of this with a dedicated S?

You should most definitely get wrench events.

What drugs were you on when you thought this up?

You could use the Default Minigame script to stop the minigames, it makes minigame starting and leaving require admin.

Woo hoo, I'm going to have the good internet connection this evening. Look for Click tower, and you can just hop in, pick a floor and go. See you soon!

arrr.... Some progress, a groovy disco, and my server crashed. How do they do it? What this needs is a more experienced Host than me... somebody needs to host somewhere else...

Another thing you may have a problem with is people using emmiters. A person using a fire emmiter may end up spewing smoke onto the floor above, and a person using the water emmiter will result in a torrent on the floor below. Lights might also light up the floors around them. You might need some kind of regulation on the emmiters you are and aren't allowed to use.
