Author Topic: David Bowie is dead  (Read 6993 times)

What rock do you live under to have never heard of the guy?

Like, I can get people who didn't like his music or anything, but I'm shocked that people haven't heard of it.
You've seriously never heard 'Under Pressure' by Queen and Bowie?, or Space Oddity, or Life on Mars?
Perhaps not even by name, but you've at least heard the songs, right?
Hey, it's not my fault if he's lacking culture...

If i told you to explain the historical context, inspirations and the elements of the Rococo art movement off hand and you got it wrong, should i snark at you for not being as "highly cultural", "educated and above other people" as me? That's a road that never ends and you're destined to get run over eventually, why bother walking on it in the first place?

The world doesn't revolve around you. Especially on the global internet, when running into people from different countries, cultures and such every individual knows something you do and something you don't. I know almost nothing about gangsta rap because I'm not used to it and don't listen to it. It doesn't mean that I'm a bad person.

I was just thinking about the "Nat Tate" hoax this morning before i heard the news. It was a hoax David Bowie was a part of which intended to expose the pretentiousness of the art community by introducing this made up artist to some New York snobs in a party and seeing them make up bullstuff about how they knew this non-existent guy to appear aware of the times.

There's a major difference in knowing the complete ins and outs of a cultural subject, and having ever heard of it.
Particularly when we're discussing some of the most famous artists in Western society.

Do I expect you to know the complete disography of Bowie, or Michael Jackson, or the Beatles? No.
Do I expect you to have heard of them, or one of their songs? Yes.
Do I expect you to know the entire cast, crew and script of Star Wars, or The Godfather? No.
Do I expect you to have heard of it? Yes.
Do I expect you to know the entire works and inspirations of Picasso, or Van Gogh, or Da Vinci? No.
Do I expect you to have heard of them, or to know of one of their famous works? Yes.

It's baffling to me that a person born in the US, living in the 21st century, using the internet and being part of communities largely comprised of similar people upon the internet, has never heard of such a household name and pop-culture icon.

The things you deem to be "reasonable" for someone to know is a subjective line drawn entirely by yourself. If you're on a high level of education, you might be fooled to think that everyone in the world is as smart as you and your friends because you don't interact with those who dropped out of school early. I was once in the bus and saw some people talk about their friends tattoo and how it looked like a small richard with a bean inside of it. I saw a quick glimpse of the picture on one of their phones and i recognized it immediately. How uncultured for those non-gamers to not recognize parts of the gaming culture, am i right?

Maybe you should get used to it then.

If you want to continue this, lets take it to the PM's.

So maybe I should just call Planr stupid then? Would that make you happier?

At either end of the spectrum of intelligence I'm sure there are plenty of people who know of David Bowie, or have heard his songs, or even seen him in films.

i only know the guy from starman

rip David

you are now floating above the world in your own tin can.  RIP Major Tom, your mission is accomplished.

people on tumblr are already trying to dig up a bunch of child enthusiasm accusations from like a decade ago to stuff on the name of a dead man

miraculous how this never happens until someone gets positive media attention

I was listening to his songs at school this morning. Welcome to 2016, already a bad start to a year

are they thinking of that one movie where he was like some kinda fairy king cus I don't think that counts

That's really disappointing that he died, at least it was peaceful and whatnot

I'm gonna go listen to a bunch of songs now

These people will never learn to stop pulling this stuff. It backfires almost every time. Just recently Twitter tried to "take down" Milo Yiannopoulos for his conservative ideals by removing his twitter "verified" tag. Result was that a hashtag of him started trending worldwide and lots of people changed their names and icons to Milo Yiannopoulos in protest.

This is like kitty but worse. This is bad. Atleast Phoenix Wright:Ace Attorney starts in this year. Coincidentally the year im going to finish the game.
