Author Topic: What Linux distro should Tristan install  (Read 1434 times)

Alright, I'm starting a computer build soon and I need to decide on a Linux distribution. In general, I want it to be as simple and easy to use as possible (as someone used to Windows) while still being fast and up-to-date.

arch
From what I've heard it's much more geared for advanced Linux users.

easy as windows? ubuntu. it's hated by most powerusers, but it's super easy to install and maintain.

the packages canocial provides are out of date most of the time but it works.

debian is more of the up to date idea, if you want to go sid, which is essentially the same as arch.

...I would vote for Ubuntu but only because it's the only one I've used (or heard of). It seems adequate??? easy to use

All of those are great, compare them and find out which one you like more.

don't listen to people who recommend Gentoo or Arch.

I guess ubuntu would probably give you the closest to a regular computer experience, of the distros I'm familiar with, but it's not going to be 100% similar to either OS X or windows
but I use debian on my laptop. I like it. ubuntu is based on debian, but I've never really used it before

elementary os is superior to ubuntu imo but less support
linux mint is on the same level

Isn't Debian usually pretty out of date, with Ubuntu and Mint being more on top of it at the cost of stability?

Another reason I'm leaning towards Debian/Mint is that Ubuntu revolves so much around Unity, which I'm not a huge fan of. I know you can replace the WM/DM, but then it loses a bit of its purpose.

the devs are starfishs though

whip out that compiler, it's time to install GENTOO

no it's the other way around, canocial does it to provides a stable enviroment.

debian sid is a rolling release, if a package gets updated, you get it right away.

tbh it was annoying the first time i used it but you'll get used to it eventually
