1648. The grand continent of Europe has only just put down arms after the most devastating war in history at the time to have blazed across its borders; the horrifying Thirty Years' War brought an estimated 6 million people to their graves for what seems to have culminated in naught. The Holy Roman Empire has passed its peak as religion has torn it apart, and though it will last another century a half, Germany will never be the same again.
There is, however, light at the end of the tunnel. The Peace of Westphalia brought new nations to the forefront of Europe, such as Sweden, Switzerland, and the freshly-independent Netherlands. The treaty seems to have quelled the fire of religious zeal, at least for the time being, and the idea of Westphalian national sovereignty has taken root. The powers that be certainly seem to be war-weary. Of course, with Europe, you never know...

Great Powers | ●Austria
Austria is the current and most common emperor of the HRE, as well as the leader of the former Catholic League. The Austrian Habsburg dynasty and their holdings were hit hardest by the Peace of Westphalia.

The Electorate of Brandenburg made large gains in the Thirty Years' War as the chief Protestant nation in the Holy Roman Empire. They are now known as Prussia and have achieved emperorship.

Denmark carried in interesting role in the Thirty Years' War as a counter to Sweden and having switched sides midway through the war, starting on the Anti-Habsburg coalition and switching to the Habsburg side. They maintain a personal union over Norway.

The Civil War in England (and Scotland and Ireland) has brought a state of republican union to the British Isles.

Despite their Catholic religion, interestingly enough France joined the war on the Protestant side to inhibit Habsburg power. After joining in 1635, they fought till the bitter end.

The United Provinces (of the Netherlands) fought on the Protestant side through the entire war, and centralized heavily afterwards. Despite their existence for 80 years, Spain did not recognize this until the Peace of Westphalia.

The former Ottoman Empire owns a large portion of southern Europe yet are often consider an outsider to the ranks of the West, presumably due to their Sunni faith. That said, they assisted the Protestants in the war with substantial cavalry support. They have since converted to Protestantism.

The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth did not directly fight in the war, but did assist the Habsburgs. Regardless, they are the dominant power in eastern Europe.

Portugal stayed neutral throughout the war and may seem to be a margin on the map of Europe, but they are a major colonial power abroad.

Ah, Russia. The backwards beast of Europe, yet still strong in manpower. They did not fight directly in the war, but assisted the Protestant side, marking Russia's first major foray into European politics.

Spain is the beast of Europe, creating the first empire on which "the sun never sets." They may have faced a loss under the Catholics, but it is not the end for the Spanish Empire!

Sweden is the true star of the Thirty Years' War. Unlike most of the other nations, which faced only loss and devastation, Sweden came out on top ready to become a great power.

You may join as any European nation - not just those listed - other than the Papal States. HRE electorates include the secular Bavaria, Brandenburg (already listed), and Saxony, and the ecclesiastical Cologne, Mainz, and Trier. The fourth secular electorate is Bohemia, which at this time is under Austrian control. The current emperor is Prussia.

Those should both be obvious and suffice for rules. If you should need more (and hopefully you don't):
- Do not RP for other nations. Never say you attacked a province and captured it, only that you tried to.
- RP reasonably; technology should be appropriate to the era, et cetera.

- Covert actions can be taken via PM. I would highly prefer you not use Steam for this purpose.
- Only European nations, or colonies independent from European nations, may be played.
- If you would like to be an exception, please talk to me personally.

- Pick a nation according to your nation RP experience and how busy you will be.
