It seems the ancient Norse settlers of North America actually did set up permanent colonies, which have been living all this time in the New World without the knowledge of their European ancestors. Their technology is very advanced for native standards, but not quite where modern Europe stands... and they still follow the Norse religion! The Vinlandic language is similar, but not the same, as their modern cousins in Scandinavia, and their practices are actually quite similar to our medieval ones.
