Author Topic: What is good webhosting  (Read 1342 times)

For anyone out there who has a website. (not a tumblr site or a free website thing)

What is a good webhosting service? really just what do you use?

isnt GoDaddy considered the standard?

Hostinger is free.
I don't understand because I'm looking and it still costs money, which is not what free means

I have two plans right now

one of them is a shared hosting plan with MochaHost, and I bought 3 years of it from them for like $90 a while ago. it'll last until april 2, 2017
http://mocha.foxscotch.us/
that's a subdomain that I have pointing to it
it's... imperfect. but the bandwidth is unlimited, which has its uses

I also have a VPS with nfoservers
any place on my site that isn't on the mocha subdomain is almost certainly hosted there
http://foxscotch.us/
this one is significantly more costly, but still just like $20 a month
being a VPS, it is inherently better than an equivalent shared hosting plan. it's also better overall. faster connections and all. only downside is the data cap

if you don't think you'd have any use for a VPS, shared hosting will do fine. there are also plenty of other VPS providers if that is what you want
I'm not sure that I would suggest MochaHost in general, but their prices are very affordable, and it isn't bad
I'd definitely suggest nfoservers though

also, side note: my domain is registered with Google Domains, and I definitely suggest them. A+++++

I was looking at the US options. I don't know if using UK servers is a good idea if I live in the US. Is it a problem?

it will make a difference when it comes to latency
but probably not a big one

the only thing you'd seriously need to worry about is legal stuff. but as long as you aren't doing anything sketchy you'll probably be fine, and worst case scenario you could just read up on the laws for wherever the server is

So on Hostinger's TOS there's this

Will this be a problem if I want to have HTML5 games on my site? I don't know if it would overlap with these restrictions.
I think they mean stuff like megaupload or torrents or something.

I think file/image sharing scripts are things that allow users to upload content. Files that you put up would be your responsibility and it would make any necessary legal action more straightforward

yes, that's what they mean. the first rule is just saying that you can't use their servers to build the next Imgur
the... second rule is actually three unrelated things, smushed into the same rule, for some reason. the first thing it lists is obvious, and the second one probably is too if you know what a proxy is. the third is kind of vague, but it almost definitely refers specifically to using the server to download things, like, using it as a spider, or something

trying to find an actual legal document about this but I'm not having any luck. their descriptions here are way too vague

edit: forgot about this, but anyway I did find a more specific terms of service on the website for the US. it probably has mostly the same rules but that's not a guarantee. they had that standard "we can terminate your service for any reason" bit, which I guess isn't surprising, but probably means that the other rules are intentionally vague

000webhost
AT&T blocks users from accessing 000webhost sites
alienating possible users is never a decent idea

Having done my own webhosting on a VPS for a while, I personally think that the best way to go is to host yourself. The only exception to this is if you need email, because email is a huge problem to set up (specifically SMTP).

I've been hosting justfilehosting.space and a number of other sites and services all under the same $5/month 'Big disk' VPS from vultr.com. Really good value if I do say so myself. If you wanted to go that route feel free to add me on steam and ask me if you have any questions setting up a VPS for web hosting.

I can't even access 00webhost
