Author Topic: forum games guide from the bloodthirsty policeman  (Read 1351 times)

yep

Step #1: Copying
Everyone copies forum games. Some wisely, some poorly. If you don't want to, you don't need to read this, but if you plan to, here's a list of games that can be used, should be avoided, or don't use at all.

OK list (go ahead)
Hunger Games/Survivor/etc. Simulator -- These are always pretty fun! best idea to avoid making Hunger Games ones if a thread is already active. Once a game is over, you might want to try being a host -- that's usually how it goes if a thread is up, just post in the thread with your game.
BLF Plays x -- Fun depending on the game. IMO, fun with strategy like games such as XCOM which can result in lots of fun for everyone. Or you could be like Taboo when he was around and do Artificial Academy 2 with forumers. Just don't be like me and not update it because of school.
A UNIQUE RPG type thing - Always a klassik. Try not to copy other people's plots though. Be original!

Avoid list (maybe not do this)
Put x here/editing threads - Tends to get stale real fast. probably not a good idea unless it's entirely unique.
Dice games - You know, random chance. High probability a thread already exists. Go there to sate your RNG hunger.
open RP - Unless the old one is too old to bump, don't bother. Just go to the old one, bump it and see if anyone bites.

No list (do not do these)
waiting room - NO. NO NO NO. This is a literal dead horse and every spinoff or recreation has failed.
ARG - Unless you are highly intelligent and know how these are done, don't even bother. You'll just get mock responses like 'arg' or something else.
Existing threads - Do not do this in a effort to make yours seem cooler. It already exists. Don't. Bother.

Step #2: The Creation

Got your idea or copy ready? Great! Be sure to put a couple things into mind before you take the responsibility:
1. If it's a you x you lose v9102391284 thread, make SURE it doesn't already exist and can be bumped. High chances it's still there and you won't waste megabytes on badspot's server.
2. If it's something like a RPG or something else, update often. Warn your participants if there will be delays, otherwise they'll just give up and bail.
3. Rules. Make rules. Please make rules or else your thread may go into chaos.

Alright. if you got all this so far, and you believe you're ready, click that post button.

step #3: Various tips

Things to prevent your thing from looking like garbage, in my opinion. Some people may think differently.
- If someone screws it up in a edit, let someone else take care of it. If it's silly, leave it be. Sometimes that's pretty nice.
- Locking a thread for a delay is stupid. only do this if your thread is closing shop for good.
- Do not make a copy of a thread if it failed the first time, or more if you've done this already. Do not do this.
- Stick with things you know. over complicated ideas can be overwhelming and a mess if you don't do it right.
- And finally: Have a fun time with your participants! You don't need to be all serious -- live a little!

This is just a tiny, short guide I made to help some people.
It's my opinions -- some might not disagree, and that's alright.
Tell me what i should add to this in terms of steps/parts, or change things in it.
Thanks for reading I guess??

Step 1: Don't be Tber123

any decent community project will be a huge timesink for any host. you'll need to invest a lot of time generating image and story content if you want players to actually participate, and then there's the random (but decently high) probability that there won't be any dedicated players.

one really good example of how to do an RPG right is ABS FIESTA REDUX - but its really clear that about 50% of the quality stems from the players taking the roleplaying seriously. Its so serious that stuffposting in there by users passing by almost never happens since it feels wrong to interrupt a game going so well, unless you're trying to join. the other 50% is qwepir giving decently interesting missions that aren't just disjointed and complicated to play.

This should be in forums games.
YOU COPIED MY FORUM GAME! YOU BROKE YOUR RULES. but this is at least better then mine.

but it's a guide for forum games

what good is it doing in a place it doesn't apply to

I tend to like most of his games.

Idk if a whole guide was necessary

Another rule to be added, as well as something that you should have done here is format the OP to be easy to read.  Sorry, but if you plan on making a clear and concise guide, grammar, punctuation, and spacing are very important.  I understand the "all lower case looks calmer and informal" argument, but a formal guide deserves formal formatting.
