Author Topic: Should I upgrade my power supply?  (Read 1171 times)

So all I need is an internal ATX with a 6 pin cable? 500+ gold edition of course.

6 pin CPU might be a little difficult to find. As far as I know most CPU power cables these days are 4+4, can't say I've ever looked into it though so I dunno

My GTX only uses 3+3 though

I should be able to use any power supply that has a 6+2 cable instead, correct?

For your mobo, yes.

But my graphics card is a 6 pin. What about the motherboard now?

The 6+2 is for your mobo. For your GPU, you should have 3+3+2

This is the cable for my graphic's card.

The CPU connector on your motherboard is different to PCI-E power, on a motherboard you have the long 24-pin ATX connector and a smaller connector that's either 4 or 8 pin which is why PSU's come with 4+4 CPU power so you can use it with both types. PCI-E power these days is usually 6+2 pin AFAIK so it can be used with both 6-pin and 8-pin connectors. For example, my GTX 980 Ti requires 2x 8pin so I have 2x 6+2 pin cables plugged into it but my old card required a 2x 6pin so I just didn't clip the +2 pins onto the 6-pin connector

Well how am I going to find out besides opening my computer?

All I know is I need at least one 6-pin connector to my graphics card.

So I need one of those.

I am not sure about the motherboard.

Alright, here are a few that should work:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-power-supply-rs550amaab1us - decent budget unit, semi-modular and a 5-year warranty. Not very good capacitors though, so I don't think I'd use for too long outside it's warranty period.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-power-supply-capstone550 - better efficiency, better electrical performance, better components and a 7-year warranty

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20650y1 - fully modular cabling, semi-fanless mode

Tbh all of these power supplies are overkill for what you have - the EVGA is enough for an extra 970 - but there aren't many good lower wattage PSUs on the market.
