This is quite shocking but interesting because I plan on digging deeper to find more history on my family, I only know this because of my grandmother and well he's my great great great uncle

I think he's asking whether he was actually involved in politics. A man drafted into the Red Army isn't automatically a communist.

I doubt your family members were 'national socialists' or were drafted in. They probably signed up because they loved their country.
