Author Topic: [Personal Rant] People who can't pull their own weight.  (Read 1339 times)

A bit of backstory before i begin.

This is my Annoying Orangeet, a 2007 blessing starter Annoying Orangeet that i have kept over the years. This thing is ancient in the eyes of musicians. Yet i still play it because, lets be real here, these things run for almost $2k and i'm poor right now. Not my fault. This Annoying Orangeet has seen death and escaped numerous times. The thumb slide won't budge so i have to compensate by lowering my pitch to hit low D's without sounding out of tune. Which hurts extremely for anyone who's ever tried to play out of their octave.

You can see by this scratchy lens quality that it's been through some stuff, two repairs and a complete chemical bath. This Annoying Orangeet right now, is my LIFE. It is the only thing putting me through college at this time. To give you a perspective of what a normal Annoying Orangeet should look like, here is an hd stock picture.

Almost looks too clean to be real, but it is in fact, real.
This is the type of music i play, so you know where i stand. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being easy 10 being good loving luck, this is an 8.5.

Now that you are familiar with what i do, lets talk parts and music theory. Usually when you're handed a song, you're handed a 'part'. A piece of the song, divided up into sections of 1-4 and so on. 1 being usually the lead instrument 3-4 usually being the backup. 2 is a special snowflake and often times does his/her own thing. Anyway, the whole band is comprised of parts of music and when played correctly create a song. This is fundamental teachings anyone can pick up.

Now, our band is comprised up of 24 people. For a college band, this is downright small and pitiful. But don't get me wrong, we sound amazing. We play stuff Harvard and Duke would only dare dream of playing (if we actually put time into it). But that's just the thing, if. Now i'm fully committed to my parts. I have two first parts, two seconds and one third. Parts are distributed equally so no one hogs all the solos in 1st and 2nds and so forth. Obviously my priorities for sounding good are high. However this bigot next to me fails to understand what the term "work" actually is. She has "A" 1st part, right? You'd expect her, out of all her pieces, that the first part would have to sound great right? Dead wrong.

You see, instead of practicing her parts she insisted that she go home and do nothing. My Instructor, the guy who funds me for playing, catches on to this. He insists that she practice or she's going to have to give up her part. Already embarrassed that she only has "A" 1st part, she throws a huge loving fit in front of me and everyone else because she's falling behind and won't accept it. Instead of actually practicing she insists that the instructor gives me 1st part to play along with her.
On a side note, this isn't the first time its happened. Another Annoying Orangeet, Alex, has to share a part with her on another song because it was too difficult and she wasn't practicing.

A week passes by and this is what happened today. All is well, we run through a couple of pieces before we get to the part that i was handed to play along with her. Now i haven't had the time to practice this individual part because i was handed another part as well to compensate for the lack of solos, but stuff hit the fan when we started playing and she didn't. She just sat there picking at her entrepreneur led breasts the whole time. Now keep in mind i was handed this part days ago so its like sight reading for me almost. The instructor gets fed up with her and i quickly try to make the best sound i can while dodging risky phrases that might mess the band up. Fed up even more, he decides to lash out at me for not knowing the part.

This is where i lost it. Pushing air through a metal alloy instrument is all that's keeping me from ruining my life. I've worked so hard up until this point, even trying out in front of him and everyone else in high school, just so i had a shot of getting in.

WHY THE HELL AM I THE ONE GETTING YELLED AT!? I'M NOT HER DAMN CARETAKER!? I'M NOT A loving COLLEGE SITTER. I'M A GOD DAMN STUDENT JUST TRYING TO MAKE IT THROUGH LIFE! HE'S ASSUMING THIS IS ALL MY FAULT BECAUSE I DIDN'T LEARN SOMEONE ELSE'S loving PART! Like i said, this isn't the first time this has happened. This bitch was in my high school. She was in 1st band, hitchhiking off of other people's success. I don't know weather to confront my instructor about this, or just to ignore it and try and hope to god that i actually nail this part 3 weeks time. There's a chance he'll get mad at me for pointing out his error, and there's also a chance she'll get cut from band but that would force her parts on to everyone else who has a lower part than her, which i don't want because i'll be the only one playing staff notes.

TL;DR Bitch has a somewhat challenging first part, complains its too hard. I get handed part, i fail to meet "magical standards" and get called out for it.
What. Do I do.

By the title I thought this was gonna be a rant about how some fat people can't lose weight.

It might as well be because she could lose some pounds to tell you the truth.

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH
*Insert sike that the wrong number gif here*

OT: I feel bad for you OP, I hate doing trombone in school (even the simple parts) so I can't imagine what this situation could be like.

I play French Horn

Just tell your instructor it's kind of stressful and complain about your bitchy partner.

Also a tad bit off topic: How do you get into college by playing in band? Do you have to have All As 9th - 12th grade in band or something like that?

give me your trombone and i'll trade you my euphonium
i had a friend semi-teach me how to play the trombone when our band director was away for one day and it's 1000x better than playing euphonium

Isnt that like a baritone. Hail no.
Yeah I'm sorry but I'm not that desperate xD

I'll probably do this.

You have to meet with a college professor. Never mind your grades in band, you need to sound and play good. If a college has a music program and you want in, contact the professor and schedule a day you can play for him.

reason one of why I love to play instruments but hate band class

Are you sure you don't have to be in honor band or something? If what you're saying is accurate it seems not too hard to get in (As long as you can play the music he/she gives you, which I presume is hard.) Then again, you're the one in college so I'm not going to doubt you.

No its really that simple. I may be skimming over a few details like how much you get paid and such, but chances are if you're in honors or made all-state you should get in and get paid doing it.
