Author Topic: blockland is the best game ever  (Read 3984 times)

I keep trying to get people to get Blockland but they tell me it's just a "minecraft clone."
Just tell them that they're lesser clones of their respective parents and that they've been listening to the man for years; that'll get 'em!

i've been playing blockland for 6000 hours and counting
really it is just a horrible game don't play it

Blockland is the ultimate sandbox game. The whole engine is designed around modding, I've never seen this in other games.

It still has so much unused potential, a shame really. Badspot should let the community help him make it even better.

honestly blockland has the best modification system i have ever seen in a single game
gmod has a cool modding system but you have to wait for sometimes hours to download all the content that servers have which is really bad
for blockland it just takes seconds if you have a nicely filled cache.db
and with stuff like minecraft you constantly have mod conflictions which wouldn't happen in a society where people weren't idiots
there isn't a lot of quality control with blockland but it has just enough to make sure that none of that stuff happens

New players have quite a different experience here, it takes 5+ minutes to download thousands of files from servers. This is the first thing they see after purchasing the game.

I'm pretty sure it could be made like 10-20 times faster.

but after playing a few popular servers and downloading everything you shouldn't have to download a single thing ever again from these big servers

Maybe, but I'm talking about the first experience. If you excitedly start a new game and it does nothing for 5 minutes, will you be happy?

i've heard about a thing where add-ons were uploaded to some amazon network for faster downloading or something

i don't remember much

you gotta be careful with add-ons, nobody wants to load for twenty minutes

Yeah this game has so much potential. At least zeblote is making mods that are kickass

i think this is a thing
stuff like t+t is probably up there so you can download it super fast
but what badspot should really do is include a beefed out cache.db on install so that players don't have to download a lot of stuff

Me and several others could make better things with the source.

Yes, badspot has a bot that joins servers to download all their files and then upload them to cloud.blockland.us. I counted them once before he locked the api, and it had over 200000 files stored there.

If you join a server it will first try to download files from the cdn, and only if they aren't found it will load them from the server. This is much faster than loading from the server, but still slow.

For example, instead of downloading the files sequentially and barely using any bandwidth, you could request 50 of them at once. If you have the bandwidth available, this would make your download ~50 times faster.

any idea on what the side effects would be of that idea, if there are any?

considering that we already get loading problems (freezes)

More bandwidth usage, I guess. This wouldn't have any side effects if implemented properly.

The load freezes don't happen while downloading files from the cdn, they happen because fast packets (from the server) get stuck for some reason.

it would be sweet if you could request the bot to join your server to download the Add-ons you have
