Author Topic: Computer Upgrade help  (Read 1067 times)

Okay before anything, i'm not a super expert I just know a few basics about computers and I want to know if there's a way I can upgrade a Dell Optiplex 745 Ultra Small?

Specs are: horrible

GPU: Intel(R) Q965/963 Express Chipset Family
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz
Ram: 2.1GB
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

If you want to know why I want to upgrade it here's why, first off my older brother got this thing for free a few years back and my parents or younger sister use it for browsing, or word docs and such. My sister might play some browser games every now and then, but as of late shes been wanting to play games with me and my younger brother like Starbound or Minecraft or even Blockland. Seeing as the only other available PC is that one I would much rather upgrade it to at least be able to play those few games instead of having to buy a new PC altogether. If it so happens that upgrading is just out of the question then ill take recommendations for something cheap that can at least play those games nothing fancy, but I would still rather upgrade soooo yeaa.

How does your computer function with 2gbs of ram? My computer died when it had 512mb of ram.

Lol cuz they dont really use it for much, my dad just uses it for amazon and my sister uses it for school work or occasionally browser games

I would say you are better off with a new computer. I don't think this is salvageable if you want to run modern games.

The upgrades would cost more than a new computer.

Damn okay, by any chance do you have some suggestions for a PC that could run those games?

Except 2 gb's is like 4 times larger?
And it will run just fine.

I suggest just buying a new computer. You can maybe use it as some kind of server or sell it. (Or give it to me)

Anyway you can build a decent gaming pc for about 500 dollars but it isnt really future proof and you have to upgrade it anyways. A good build would be something of arround 700 dollars. The peformance you get depends on the budget you have (Unless you are a total tard and pick stuffty overpriced parts)

My brother built a decent gaming computer for a bit over $300. Talk to him. ;)

I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but it would really cost that much for a PC that can run those three games I listed at maybe even just medium settings? I just don't wanna spend that much right now maybe later when I get some more money

Remember everyone, one does not simply upgrade a power supply on a dell computer.

have you already tried to play those games? I have a laptop worse than that and it could run all three

Blockland works well at around a 20000 brick limit before it lags to much to be enjoyable. I tried to play Starbound it was okay on the main menu but when i tried to play it gave me some error, and Minecraft crashed after I pressed play lol

Minecraft is p cpu intensive and with that cpu thats older then my grandmother... gl hf
It stall has 65nm for christ sake

I don't lag until I reach the actual hard brick limit.

GTX 960 4gb

16gbs ram

a gtx 960 is overkill for what op wants. they probably just need a new cpu (im not totally sure but an i3 would probably do) + 2-4 gigs of ram and they'll be fine

edit: they might not even need a new cpu if they get like a cheap gpu, im talking like gt 520 levels of cheap. my $60 gt 520 made one hell of a difference with blockland, improved preformance probably by like 3-4 times

I might add, its a Dell Optiplex "Ultra small" lol so I can't put any actual graphics cards in it, there's no PCI express slot

here's what it looks like inside
