Describe the circuimstances after the accident. Does he immediately call the ambulance etc.? Because if not, it's sounding an awful lot like he's lying about how he wrecked the car.

Well, if he has the insurance data from the other vehicle, it was a 3rd party collision. If not, either he's a loving moron or wrecked the car himself. As for the latter, you could brown townyze the damage, the way the car is bent/broken to get an idea of what he hit to damage it.

Also, OP, if the car has no chasis, which many don't to make it cheaper, it's probably totaled anyways. The chances of fixing modern cars are slim.
