Probably because it's more useful to know of 50 different countries and where they are, than to know of 50 different states and their location in one country.

When it comes to international news/relations what are you going to hear;
"Today Iran came to a deal with US businesses"?
or
"Today Iran came to a deal with Kentucky businesses"?

Even if it was a deal with Kentucky, you could say USA instead and everyone would know who and where you were talking about.

Funny thing is I doubt most US citizens could do something like this correctly.

yeah i dont know the capitals of most states

i know for a fact that dallas isn't the capital of texas, and that the capitals of new york and kansas are albany (because it's not new york city) and kansas city respectively, but otherwise i dont pay much attention
