You know you can stomp someone in the foot in the right spot it will immobilize them for a few seconds. It only works as long as they aren't expecting it and I doubt they would have expected someone to stop them in the foot.

You can shoot yourself in the shoulder.

You could have jumped backwards which would send the gunman to the ground.

Plenty of other options to sacrifice yourself while the other family gets away. Plus why are you taking a gunman's word for it that he won't shoot your family after doing what he says?
