Author Topic: Tributary II «7» — Day 3, Morning — Bah, no one seems to care.  (Read 12982 times)

Olga strips down and covers herself in muddish clay thick enough to prevent bees from getting to her skin. She parts her hair in front of her ears and ties it like a helmet strap under her jaw, and muds up her head, covering everything but her mouth and eyes. This is because unlike the nostrils, she can forcibly spit out and/or crush anything that enters her mouth as she breathes.

She takes her spearlog and throws it at the bee hive before immediately grabbing more clay and fixing whatever fell off when she threw the spearlog. She then approaches the hive, grabs it by the spear and submerges it in the cold stream.

Olga successfully subdues the beehive and is stung only twice, once on her thigh, and once on the back side of her wrist.

After Kamila finishes the initial mortar base, she gathers up pine needles and crumbles them thoroughly, albeit very uncomfortably in her hands.  She bundles them up and goes over to the tree that she just chopped down, taking some pitch off of the bark and smoothing it over the pine needles.

She then grabs the clay and sets a large lump down on the large, flat rock, flattening it and pressing her fingers into it to create a grid.  She leaves it to dry while she searches for wood.

Kamila also gathers some smaller dry sticks and some mid-size dead fallen branches, chopping them up into finer pieces.  As her grid is now dried sufficiently after her extensive search of fuel, she places it over the mortar, and surrounds the edge of the grid with a chimney pipe.

She gets a dry stick and cuts a small indentation in it about 0.5" wide with a small rock and gets another stick, placing it between her palms and begins rubbing the stick between her palms.  As she continues, smoke rises up.  She then bundles the fuel together and blows softly at first.  More and more smoke comes from the bundle until the pitch catches, where it combusts quickly.  She sets the burning lump into the mortar and begins to stack wood on top of it.  As the fire rises, she begins to shape a small pot the size of her fist out of the remaining lump of clay.

Olga waits for the bees to freeze up in the stream, and then eventually pulls the hive out. She collects the unconscious/dead bees in it, pulls their stingers and heads off, and deposits the carcasses into part of the hive. She leaves the larvae in the stream for a while longer so they all die.

When the bees and larvae are processed, she closes the hive up and makes a makeshift goodie bag out of her tunic, which she puts the hive and bdnags into. She ties the tunic closed using her trousers, the only article of her clothing that she puts back on being her shoes because, while she waits for the mud to harden and crack off, shoes are the only thing worth donning.  She washes her hair in the stream, though.

She tests a tegacha berry first in her hand, then in her mouth. When deemed safe to eat, she gathers a solid amount and deposits them into her bag. She also looks for more bdnags and general edibles.

Olga finds more bdnags and tegacha berries and puts them in her bag.  In the distance downstream, she sees a single large swine-like creature.

The water is lapping up somewhat softly against the shore.  Adok notices several crabs along shore scuttling about.

Kamila finishes shaping the clay cup and piles up more wood at her newly-made kiln.

While she waits for the clay kiln to fire, she searches for more smaller trees and saplings so that she can create a simple, temporary hut.

Olga puts down her gear and throws her spearlog at the bolgil, aiming to disable one of its wings.

Regardless, the spearlog falls short and bounces off of a rock, hitting the bolgil, piercing it skin, but not sticking.

god dammit
i misread swine as swan

Olga releases a battle cry as she charges the bolgil with her axe, and prepares to leap to one of her sides when the bolgil countercharges her. Olga's goal is to get a passing blow on one of ithr bolgil's kneecaps.

The bolgil is spooked and makes a run for it, running down the slope, squealing.

Olgra grabs her spearlog and throws it again, along with her axe. She continues screaming her war cry.

The spear this time flies past the bolgil, sticking into the ground, where the log impales the bolgil in the face, going deep into the skull.  Although the bolgil is already dead, the airborne axe flies into the dead swine, hitting it in the rump.

carpe diem

Olga begins working the bolgil corpse. She removes her axe and spearlog, and begins hacking the baculum out of its groin to fashion it into a knife. When the bone is in usable condition, she cuts open the belly and begins removing the digestive and urinary tracts entirely. She scrapes out the bile and excrement with a rock and puts the guts in a stream, secured by a rock acting as a weight. She starts to skin the animal.

Adok goes to grab some of the crabs, preferably just behind their pinchers, so as not to be pinched.

Olga skins the bolgil, leaving most of the corpse sitting on the inside of the skin.  She is able to extract some generous cuts of pork.  As she looks up to wipe sweat and mud from her brow, she sees black birds circling.  She looks toward the innards draining in the river, and sees a few of them landing nearby.

Crab get.

The only problem is how to store them.

Over the course of an hour, Kamila chops down four more trees of similar size, drags them back, bares them, cuts them into log sizes that would create a house frame.  Kalima uses a particular log to measure the length of the construction site.  Using a rock, she measures the length of her hand, and creates notches at somewhat regular intervals.  The frame only contains six vertical poles at the moment, arranged with the smaller poles on the outside with the larger poles in parallel to each other between the shorter poles.

After the frame is set up, the fire has died down to just coals.  She carefully lowers the clay bowl into the kiln and puts more dry wood in the fire after sweeping out some ashes.  After she gets the fire burning hot, she covers the top of the kiln with flat stones and heads back down to the Ywazje riverbank, where she finds a hard, flat stone and begins to look for smaller stones that can be sharpened into reliable tools.

While searching, she realizes that she is very thirsty, and drinks from a clear part of the stream.
