Author Topic: can a router assign ip's over its wan port?  (Read 1274 times)

i have this odd issue
basically the wiring in this house is super weird and i was wondering if its possible to have the google onhub assign ips to stuff plugged into the ethernet outlets (back over the wan port in the router)

i'm no networking expert but I've always done modem -> router -> switch instead of modem -> switch -> router

but in the former case, yeah, that's pretty much one of the points of a router

Some modems/routers allow you to do an "AP Mode" which basically traces everything back to the main router that provides everything such as assigning IPs to each device on the network

yeah thats what i would like to do but that isnt feasible without putting the router in the basement (stuffty wifi)

but there isnt any other router

so what's going on exactly?
like, have you bought this already and are trying to make it work, or are you making sure it will work before buying it?
what is you previous/current setup?

yeah but there is no main router in his setup

unless his modem is also a router, but he didn't indicate that
edit:

yeah

what he could do is move the google onhub to the modem and let the google onhub handle the rest

i havent bought anything and id like to see if my idea would work before i spent $400 on networking equipment
its a new house that my brother is buying that has some previous stuff in it (switch with the ethernet leading to the outlets in the rooms)

stuffty wifi
i don't get it

i mean

my understanding is you have coax in basement, and want to run a long cable to upstairs and put router there
but i don't understand how position of switch changes that
run a long cable between moden and router, then put switch there?

If you have a DHCP server running on a WAN port, bad stuff happens...
Like your ISP sending you a nice letter saying to stop or else.

I think he's confusing WAN and WLAN

It's possible through vLANs but I doubt your switch is managed.  Either way your network layout is insecure (computers connecting directly to the modem with no internal firewall) and should probably just be redone.

switch is a big one (24 ports) and in a place where moving it would make more trouble because of all the wiring that goes to it

I always associate WAN with Doggo because when you pet him the text "wan" appears by doggo's mouth
