for decades, armenian separatists have occupied the nagorno-karabakh border region between the two countries (officially still a part of azerbaijan), so azerbaijan launched an attack at its borders to drive the armenian military stationed there out (and incidentally hitting civilians in the area)

armenia is part of CSTO, the russian equivalent of NATO, and is liable to invoke russian assistance because they are the defending party. putin, however, has stressed desires of a mutual ceasefire in the region with no outlooks of intervening militarily (as of yet)
