have you tried wiping the entire hard drive
I did this to my laptop like 3 weeks ago and it actually worked
Backed up the important stuff though
but seriously dont wipe it, only do it as a last resort

have you tried wiping the entire hard drive
I have 706Gb free space out of 869Gb. Thats about 160Gb's of space that im using.
I doubt its the hard drive

What OS do you have?
Have you tried running mbam or some av software on it? if so what are the results?

Reinstall the operating system to start fresh again. That can make a big difference.

Other than that, try seeing if you can clean dust out of it with a can of compressed air (don't use a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner, just compressed air). If I had a better connection right now I'd try to link you "clean the fan" from youtube.

Defrag the hard drive.

I've cleaned my fan quite recently and it wasnt that bad really
I also swapped a ram stick I had lying arround so I had 8Gb's instead of 6 because I mainly use this for editing stuff.

I dont really want to wipe the whole hard drive too. I dont feel like going the process to back my stuff up ,remove everything and possibly forget something really importand wich I usually do.
My hard drive defrags weekly tho

As a protection service, I highly recommend using Vipre.  I use it on all of my machines.

It is extremely efficient and doesn't use up too many system resources, so much so that you can run your programs smoothly whilst it's running.

How old is the machine?

it's less about the space on the hard drive and more about a clean start

and if you're using windows (which it sounds like), you could probably swap to something like Ubuntu and see if that's faster
you haven't really told us the purpose of it yet, if you're just using it to host things you could go with a headless version of Ubuntu, if it's for more than just internet browsing (gaming), then windows might be needed

If your on windows do yourself the favor and turn of the superfetch service, it puts an unnecessary load on the HDD.

Also the best thing to do is to simply upgrade your HDD to an SSD.

Do you have Java installed?
If yes, have you updated it recently?
