That's when I knew it was a virus.

that looks like a reskin of shimeji, a desktop buddy that seems quite popular. many reskins of the program can be found online.
i tried it myself; it's harmless and i don't think it would just download itself onto his pc and run. to multiply like that, the user must right-click the characters and select the option from a drop-down list.

isn't a virus supposed to like spread and infect your computer? this just looks like he downloaded some desktop buddy software and put one too many of them onto there, though then again a virus can both put stupid stuff like this onto your comp and infect files but that doesn't look like what's happening here

those creative viruses/malware basically dont exist at all anymore except for archival purposes because they're so easy to detect and remove

yea man, i know those ones, im subscribed to danooct1 and rogueamp. thing is though, most viruses today (which are probably easier to get than most older viruses) tend to run in the background and try not to make themselves as noticeable as possible since most people have some kind of anti-virus these days.
