I'm betting on the protagonist being Joe's son. He went down south to hide out for a while before Joe's Adventures, he's young enough for him to have been born then, and it would be logical that through his direct Sicilian ancestry, he'd be eligible to join the Mafia. Also, of course, he looks a bit like him. This all isn't coincidence, it's deliberate. Bet on it.
