Author Topic: Should Tabloid Magazines/Websites/Channels Exist?  (Read 1050 times)

It seems to me that they are doing more harm than good (or at least that's my opinion, anyways).

I think celebrity worship culture is ridiculous in the first place. It's like a bunch of high schoolers stalking popular kids.

for the greater good, no
they should be legal, of course

Should tabloids ought to exist? Probably not. They're a waste of time.

Should they be legal? Of course. Nothing good comes from trying to police things that most people enjoy.

so are video games

Are you implying that video games shouldn't exist either?

"This just in leaked pictures of *insert famous actor name here* eating a sandwich"

This kind of stuff that should be discarted.

Lol who are we to say what should/shouldn't exist? Isn't it ironic that a bunch of teenagers and people in their early 20s that play a Lego video game want something equally stupid to be removed from existence?

Imagine what all those girls who watch reality TV and read tabloids 24/7 would say about Blockland if you asked them.

I'm inherently biased because I play video games.

However, I'd argue that video games have more utility as recreation. Millions of people use video games as a way to completely escape from whatever makes their lives so stuffty, while tabloids only offer an insubstantial distraction when you're waiting at the doctor's office. I'd also argue that the utility that tabloids offer is balanced out by the fact that they only exist because people go around chasing famous people and trying to make their lives worse.

Everybody, regardless of demographics, likes to stuff on low-brow garbage. The public consciousness can tell when something is rightfully popular versus when something is popular but ought not to be. It's human nature, man.

But doesn't chasing around famous people act as escapism as well? If I'm restricted to a lower-class feminine role in my family I too would resort to tabloids to make myself feel better, to have dreams of wealth and power that I won't obtain in my life because of my family's situation

And I don't think there's such thing as 'rightly popular' as that's a very subjective label to slap on a fad. Sure, I agree that all the reality television and celebrity culture is really loving stupid but it still holds a place in our society and I wouldn't take it away, especially since so many people love to keep up with it

I don't really understand how tabloids would relate to fantasies of grandeur

In video games you control a character in a completely different world with different rules and atmospheres, generally with little to no responsibilities or lasting consequences for actions. You can see why video games are in an entirely different realm of 'escapism' from pretty much any single other form of escapism on the planet. Beyond escapism I'd say that video games also serve a social purpose as well, having fun with friends on online games, that ain't something that tabloids can replicate (if we're comparing the two lol)
