Author Topic: Why is it normal to tip your barber?  (Read 3687 times)

it began as a bribe way back. but then business owners just used it as an excuse to pay staff less.
they should unionize to raise pay, or end tipping if they ever want to earn a real wage.
the only ones who benefit from tips are business owners.

this is completely right, but I don't think the way to get rid of tipping is just to suddenly stop tipping. everyone would have to do it at the same time, which never happens.

Tipping does not exist in the UK for some reason
It does, but we generally resent it and it's not common to all places.
It pretty much only happens in restaurants.
10% is the UK average/norm, although the English apparently tip 8% on average while Welsh tip over 10%.

I would only tip in a restaurant, and usually just the change from my pay. Maybe a more specific tip if a waiter has been really good.

But we generally don't need to tip because we have a national minimum wage for all jobs. A full time waitress may earn no more than a full time shop assistant, and we don't tip those.
I've never heard of tipping barbers/hairdressers either.

whenever i'm with a group of friends or classmates, we always tip a whole lot because it's just really nice seeing the worker get happy when they see how much we're tipping. when i was with my school to see dolly parton's dixie stampede, my friend tipped a waitress like $40 (all of my classmates together probably tipped her at least $100) and the lady started crying and almost refused to accept it.

i just like seeing people happy, but maybe i'm just too nice of a person

A lot of tipping jobs make less pay / not a lot and the extra money is really nice to have; the recipients are almost always extremely grateful. I tip regardless of how I see the service. I know it's pretty unfair to say, but IMO if somebody gives you a service and makes stuffty money like minimum wage, it's almost a richard move to not tip them.

if they're unhappy with their wage then they should probably start applying at different places and dropping when another workplace wants them

i don't tip unless the worker does something above and beyond, which they generally don't

I've never heard of barber tipping. I just get my haircut, give them the $$$, and go about my day.

And yes I am in America.

tipping a barber is pretty standard afaik

i dont tip anywhere cept a mid tier ($40 per person) restaurant or better.
What the heck?

Tipping is completely pointless and actually inherently bad for waiters, but you should do it because nobody has managed to change the system yet. If you refuse to tip, you'll just be screwing with the lives of the waitstaff, and tipping won't go away any quicker.
but restaurant waiters are getting paid minimum wage unless they're getting tipped, so if you have good service you get more pay
seems fine to me

OT: generally i tip at local barbershops
