Author Topic: rant/my internets garbage and i want to punch someone  (Read 1080 times)

so since forever and always ive been stuck with 350 kb/s internet. if you have it worse and want to complain, whatever, but honestly i could care less and heres why.

im pretty used to the really slow internet speed, i mean after all i've been living with it my whole life. but things get extremely annoying when it comes to other people in my house. my families favorite thing to do is netflix. oh boy from 11:00 am to 12:00 am there is at least one person in this house watching netflix. whether its my brother, my mom, or my dad. me personally, i don't care for netflix, but because of what i'm about to tell you, i hate netflix with a pure passion.

as soon as someone jumps on netflix, i might as well sit back and grab myself a martini, because it shuts off whatever im doing for at least 10 minutes while netflix super freaking rocket streams the beginning of what their watching. that means i can't browse the web, can't play a multiplayer game, and i can't hear my friends over voice chat. As soon as it calms down, i'm still stuck with slower internet. if i'm playing a game, it idles between 170 to 350 ping. this only bothers me slightly because when im playing a game i know how to aim ahead of time so my internet catches up. what pisses me off though is that it jumps in random patterns, from 600 to over a thousand ping. i have to keep the stupid net graph always on when i'm playing blockland or left 4 dead just so i know when im getting latency jumps. and i can't always pay attention.

people have given me countless half-assed solutions and a lot of them consist of telling me to limit everyone else's connection or make mine better. thats not an option for two reasons.

1. i'm not paying for the internet. as soon as someone finds out i'm limiting their connection and their poor netflix starts to buffer, its instantly my fault and i have to stop using the internet so they can watch netflix.
2. my modem/router doesn't even support it. i looked it up and those "settings" that it offers likes QoS are not comparable to other routers settings and are essentially just there to make people think they offer it (basically its fake and it does nothing).

your other solution would to be to get a different service.
- i live in a pretty rural area and this is the only internet service available in this area
- my isp does provide a better service but we can't get it because they would have to replace the phone lines or something and they're underground so basically they said screw it no way.

what about moving? i wish. but i don't think were moving any time soon and it'd be nice to just be able to just not have to freaking deal with this garbage while im still a teenager and don't grow tired of playing games because ill be busy with bills and taxes and other adult stuff.

if you have anything similar feel free to share maybe we can just go punch people together

here you can punch me
you can too freek

i'm in the same situation trog

Wow I didn't think I was the only one with 350kb's.....I don't know if your using DSL like at&ts or comcast (if they have one) though

your only other methods are to make a schedule or to find something to do always at the hour like sleep or go to the toilet/shower or something

kill them trog. do it.

dsl through century link. its not necessarily bad considering the price is low but again its the only thing available here and they just screw you over being lazy and absolutely is terrible for people who actually know how to work around with internet because they don't offer any of it. even things like portforwarding, dmz, etc. its all just "fake" options and they do not actually work.

I feel for you man, I had internet just like this during the whole spring break.

as soon as someone finds out i'm limiting their connection and their poor netflix starts to buffer, its instantly my fault
that literally would be your fault...

anyway my internet's trash. it's satellite, so latency is like 500ms minimum on a very good day. plain can't play online video games. ever. even if nobody else is doing anything. and we have a 15GB a month data cap. it's usable for most stuff until that data cap is reached, but after that, the download speed drops to around 0.08mbps. which is like 80kbps
the only chance at improvement is if a cable company nearby decides to service our house. they totally could, because they service all of our neighbors, just not us. our house is a couple hundred feet or so from the road, and I guess that's the problem? but they can provide a landline (which we don't need), so I dunno how they could do that but not regular cable

also the price is crazy. $75 a month for this bs. not to mention all the stupid fees they add, like when we inevitably exceed the data cap. yep. a fee AND throttling. what a wonderful company

Try and do a bit of research into your ISP and their plans; work out if your download/upload is correct or if it's low because of some problem. For example, I was getting 5Mb/s down, but it turns out my ISP is supposed to offer 30Mb/s down.

Ring their tech support if you find a problem (or even if you don't), and try and get yourself registered for authorisation; my bill payer authorised me to call out techs and do some other cool stuff that normally only the bill payer can do. Let them know the DL rate is stuff, and see if they can address it any way.

that literally would be your fault...
i've never actually done it (because i can't and it wouldn't actually fix anything if i could) but there has been in situations where the internet decides to be slow and their netflix starts buffering so they blame it on me and all i'm doing is like browsing the forums or something. pretty much cliche "parent's dont know whats actually going on and refuse to think otherwise" garbage.

also it looks like you got it much worse than me. i can't stand isp's as a whole.

I've been calling that cable company every once in a while, but whenever I call I'm talking to people at some call center far away, as opposed to the local branch. and nothing ever gets done. I can't even get answers, like WHY we can't get service. so I think I'm just going to go to the local branch in person soon, maybe they will be more useful

no doubt were getting what were paying for (i think). we pay for 10 Mbs which i'm on wireless (no i can't drag an ethernet across the house/bring the router to my room) so it kinda bumps it down to 3mbs (i really hate using bits as measurement so i just say i have 350 kilobytes per second)

lmfao Trog.

I know you are a real brother and the struggle is real too. For that I pray for you.

But you have it MADE A F compared to my connection :/

1 mb is either 1000 or 1024 (differing sources) kb.
