we run SMF v1. they're running SMF v2.

i think badspot's talked about why he doesn't want to update to v2, but i forget where. he's got a reason for it.

If you can't remove anything, why not just add a text field about this big:

Of course, I don't really know much about SMF.  The profile settings are locked forever for all I know.

the real issue is badspot doesn't usually make changes to the forum

there's a good amount of edits, like how he removed the stars and membergroups under people's names, removal of topic icons, and the whole key system is a big one.
