Author Topic: Help: "Repairing" the drive forgeted the FS  (Read 732 times)

So I lost a few files because of DeepFreeze. It was off for the computer I used and it was turned on without anyone telling me. I had some important files on it.

I backed them up to my flashdrive. When I plugged my flashdrive to my home PC, it says "The drive cannot be used until it is formatted"

lol forget you, that's some important stuff in my drive. I opened up the disk management and it showed "RAW File Data" on the drive. Can I recover that somehow?

piriform recuva :JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ

Eep.

"RAW" indicates that Windows believes the drive is unformatted, and a possible cause is because it can't access the MBR which tells Windows how the drive has been formatted, what partitions exist etc.

The first thing to do is, if possible, attempt to use the inbuilt Windows repair tools, such as Right-Click on the drive, then Properties>Tools, and then under "Error Checking" select "Check Now...", making sure to select both options. You can also try chkdsk from the Command Prompt (essentially the first option but sometimes it seems to do better?).

If that doesn't work, do as Foxscotch said and try using a Data Recovery tool such as Piriform Recuva. Unfortunately, these tools rely on certain parts of the Windows OS and so I can't guarentee this will work.

If you're still out of luck, you might need to try a tool like MBRWizard, BOOTICE or MBRtool, assuming that it really is the MBR that's forgeted up.

I wish you the best of luck. This kind of situation sucks but hopefully you can fix it.

install Minitool Partition Wizard, you got two options here.

you can do data recovery and recover up to 1GB free if you wish to try that or you can start up the regular partition wizard.

if you decide to start the regular partition wizard you will right click on your flash drive and click on "Partition Recovery", follow the instructions and MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DRIVE LABEL (as in the name you gave the usb drive) IS CALLED IN CASE IT FINDS MULTIPLE PARTITIONS and select it and bingo. if it finds nothing then try the data recovery. if that doesnt work you're p much forgeted without a professional service.

edit: oh and you'll need to assign a drive letter to it after doing the partition recovery.

also does it forget the FS (forum system?)
