I asked my Britbong father and he said it is "YOO-NO", and brought up the argument it has only 1 O and that is at the end, nothing to do with the matter.

Do you Americans pronounce the letter "u" like "oo"? Because that would answer this stupid conundrum.

No, it's called basic phonetics. Long u verses short u. Not that hard, really. :|
