Author Topic: akio attempts to upgrade his PC: resolution part 3 of 3 rip monitor..  (Read 3342 times)

I recently purchased an EVGA 960 and I'm having trouble figuring out how to replace the old card.

This is how far I've gotten. YouTube tutorials aren't doing much for me.

The old GPU is that card-like thing at the bottom of the image, underneath the fan attached to the motherboard via a slot.

In order to remove it, you'll need to push on the tab like thing at the end of the slot. You'll also need to check for any screws that are keeping the metal plate on the side of the GPU attached to the external housing. Aside from that, you can simply pull it out.

Put your new GPU in the same slot doing the reverse of what you did to get the old one out, and then attach the appropriate cords as seen in the manual.

The screws are virtually impossible to get out. I'll update if I can figure it out but this is looking grim

Can your PSU even handle the new card?... That computer looks pretty generic and stock

It is generic and stock however after looking into it, it apparently can handle some beefy cards

I've actually decided that I should probably get a new PSU, as the one I have right now is the bear minimum and I don't want to risk anything.

I got a new 600W psu, but the problem is: where the forget does it go? The metal box in the top left does not come off I don't believe

should be screws on the outside of the case

Detach all cables that connect to the PSU, cut all the ziplines that hold the cables to the case, and while holding the PSU up unscrew the screws on the back of the case. Should just plop into your hand.

Dont some cases have an extra feature where after unscrewing the PSU, theres like a little lever similar to the ones used to keep GPUs connected and you have to hold it down to allow the psu to slide out?

I can't figure out how to get it out.

I pushed in the yellow thing on the right of the card but no luck.

PSU is pretty easy to remove, just unplug the wires from the mobo and other accessories and unscrew PSU

take a picture of the metal pci slots near the back from the angle that you took the last picture

I've always recommended just straight up going for a new PC build if you need a new PSU. The effort it takes to rewire an entire stock computer, I think, isn't worth the effort.
(Unfortunately you locked the thread before I got to append my post and recommend this)

Also for your GPU, you need to remove the PCI-E mounting from the back plate of the case.

Screw needs to come off before you can leverage the card out of the PCI-E slot.

Alright I give up, I'm going to send this to a local place so they can do it. There's no way I'll be able to figure out how to get these in without breaking stuff.

Thanks everyone for your help.

What did I do wrong and how do I fix it?

I didn't put the thing under the card back. I didn't think it would affect anything though
