Sure the gorilla wasn't going to harm the kid, but the park knows very well that if anything happens to the child theb they will have some severe reputation issues along with possible dumb lawsuits.

I was under the impression they killed the gorilla after the fact because of what I saw on the television, makes a lot more sense now that I know they killed it while it was dragging the child.
