if you think $800 is bad, there are $3000 razer laptops.

that laptop is perfectly fine

if you need more space external drives exist for that reason.

Would you say this laptop is decent then?
I haven't even looked at the specs yet. The biggest price factor that you're dealing with here is the fact that you're choosing a laptop over a desktop.

You mentioned that you were thinking of using it for school, which is the only thing that you mentioned which requires portability. Keep in mind that laptops are almost always more expensive pre-built than their desktop equivalents. The hardware in that laptop also takes additional power (the electrical kind) meaning your battery life will be very poor.

I'd say before you start worrying about memory, graphics, etc, consider whether you like portability over a cheaper and/or better desktop.

I've had minor troubles installing different OS's than what's included on some laptop models, but that's probably just an isolated instance. Generally this is perfectly valid, if you don't like the OS, just wipe the HDD/SSD when you first get it and install whichever OS you want.

if the laptop is newer theres a chance itll have drivers that arent compatible with older OS's. my laptop's wireless driver doesnt work on w7 and dell's site doesnt have a version of it for w7

He is aware of this. He has a pretty powerful desktop that he built himself, so I'm pretty sure he just needs a portable computer now.

This. Probably should have mentioned this. I'm out of the house a lot though which is why I need a laptop this time around.

Running FL studio and photoshop does not require a quad-core processor and a high-end graphics chipset. This laptop seems like overkill.
