Because some people actually enjoy watching them. Not everything is about money.

Because some people actually enjoy watching them. Not everything is about money.

Just like some people enjoy NASCAR just for the crashes.

Doesn't mean we should waste all these resources on gasoline to watch people ride around in a circle for I don't know how many loving hours but I hear NASCAR is so god damn loving long people get so bored the crashes aren't even worth the entertainment.

Nascar takes about 2 to loving 4 hours to complete, I just looked it up.

That's ridiculous and a lot of money and fuel being wasted.

Are you derailing your own topic to be about Nascar?

Nascar doesn't use gasoline
they use corn ethanol
so there you go

also do you not realize how much money nascar/motorsports bring in?

Doesn't offset the resources being wasted and pollution.

Doesn't offset the resources being wasted and pollution.
And? It's entertainment. It's for fun

If you were really serious about wasting resources and pollution you would go after the transcontinental shipping and construction

You also do realize Nascar is one of the shorter races right? I mean races like the 24hours of daytona/lemans/nurburgring/spa/wtfelseisleft and the baja 1000 pollute way more than nascar

daytona is nascar
there's more than just a oval there smart one

Also let me just go through the list of technological advancements that motorsports brought
Anti-lock brakes, fuel injection, traction control, disc brakes, hybrid technology, carbon fiber, crumple zones and a stuff load of other stuff I can't think of off the top of my head.

because sega wants to make more cash-in games

Same reason you still play Blo- er, post on the BLF: because it's fun. Also what they said about it being a celebration of nations and such. Also, the "we could spend it on the space program instead" argument assumes that there are literally only two things being funded in the entire world. Plus, NASA is funded by the U.S. Government, while the Olympics are funded by the organization that organizes the Olympics plus the host nation. Further, if you wanted to cut something to fund NASA, cut the military budget. I'm sure we don't need ten different supercarriers, given that we are not going to be fighting a naval war with any other nation anytime soon.

Can you provide sources for this claim? After some searching half of the examples you named seem to have been originally developed in/for the aerospace industry before being adopted by automobiles.

to showcase the athletic expertise of the countries participating
to reap the rewards made from bidding millions of dollars to host the Olympics
to showcase the host country's cultural significance
to show the world that your athletes are better than everyone else's
bragging rights
accomplishment
entertainment

accuatlly my wording was a bit weird didn't mean to say they were "invented" but more "standardized"

Shut down humanities education, it doesn't contribute anything practical towards civilization. Additionally, tear down the national parks and hunt all the unproductive wildlife to extinction. If it doesn't actively contribute to the scientific progress of society, it isn't worth keeping around so it can waste resources and distract people.
