i haven't had this problem until last night, but windows explorer is lagging really bad and freezing up
does anyone know what's causing it and how to fix it?

if it matters any i have windows 10

I had this issue almost immediately after I upgraded to Windows 10 so yeah it matters. I fixed it by deleting all of my graphics drivers and re-installing them on the Windows website. My PC worked better than ever after that. It won't hurt for you to try it, but I suspect something else is causing it considering you've most likely been running Windows 10 without issue for a while.
