I can't use my computer's start menu

A couple days ago I ran into the issue where my start menu just refuses to work. Nothing new has been installed on my computer and I did a virus scan to find nothing. Anyone have a clue on how to fix it? A friend recommended I reinstall windows but my dad misplaced the key and we would have to buy another copy.

have you tried ending the cortana process in the task manager, and clicking on the start menu again? (assuming you're on windows 10 here)

You could try turning it off and on again. That or go into task manager and restart Windows Explorer.

I turn off my computer whenever I'm not using it, turning off and on won't do anything.

try windows update, as some driver(s) may be missing.  If this doesn work, go to the BIOS and start in safe mode with command prompt to see if all the sys 32 drivers work.

make a new user, i had the same problem and that fixed it for me
may take a while to get your old stuff to your new user but that's the easiest way to do it

Do you have Avast Antivirus?
If so, uninstall it. It's what caused the same problem for me.

I went into BIOS and then realized I had no idea how to start in safe mode so I left so I could google it and somehow everything works now
