I know what you're thinking, "...we weren't doing this already?" but it's true. we weren't.

the US has filed a comprehensive report on human rights abuses in north korea along with ten state leaders responsible. sanctions have been placed on the country and the ten individuals, freezing financial assets, cutting off exports, and other measures designed to hopefully rope in chinese support.

"what about those UN sanctions from that thread awhile ago? weren't all of those things already settled?" they were settled and indeed, the US is part of the UN so the sanctions did apply. however, that was for nuclear ambition and not human rights abuses. these sanctions are to convince the UN to impose more limitations, but this time in the name of human rights abuses and not just nuclear armament.

in response to the sanctions imposed only by the US, north korea resumed its nuclear pursuit. plutonium extraction has resumed and several refineries have been reopened as a result. the US, looking to protect south korea from any such threats, has decided to place an "iron dome" equivalent like that found in israel to defend the peninsula.

pyongyang and beijing are upset at this development; pyongyang because they can't nuke south korea, and china because they can't use missile systems on the peninsula.

there exist no formal diplomatic ties between the US and north korea (US acknowledges south korea as the only legitimate state on the peninsula), but diplomatic communication still occurred between the two nations through an uplink located at the UN HQ in new york. north korea has decided to sever this sole connection following obama's decision to sanction the rogue state for human rights abuses, opting to instead invoke "wartime measures" to deal with us

additionally, satellites have detected increased activity at north korea's usual nuclear test spot, birthing suspicions of a fifth nuclear test
