Yeah, no. Unless you're going for an art course where a portfolio is everything, most colleges heavily rely on grades as a marker of your study and skill.
except it's absolutely easy to get good grades in comparison to doing something about it---i may have miloveaggerated, grades do matter, but compared to experience not so much
cambridge has explicitly stated that they look out for those who have gone out to demonstrate their skillset in a practical use

grades matter to colleges because grades matter in college. if you don't have the motivation, patience, whatever, to make good grades in high school, why would you be able to do it in the much more competitive environment of a university?

I used to do this in my lifeskills math class, then I got into real maths and we have to use pure blank white paper. I wish I had lined paper.
