Author Topic: Milo Yiannopoulos banned from Twitter  (Read 4053 times)

I'll reiterate what I said a long time ago.

Censoring 'hate speech' from social media does absolutely nothing to address the problem. It gives the impression that these problems no longer exist, while only driving bigots into underground circles where they can echo their beliefs unchallenged and become more hateful.

The only way that people can combat racism is by having an open conversation, and throwing someone out because they've said something offensive violates the entire purpose of the conversation to begin with. You just end up with more and more insular communities like SJW-tumblr-circles and /pol/ that serve no purpose but to allow people with like-minded beliefs to circlejerk and radicalize.

That being said, if someone is doing absolutely nothing but hurling slurs at another user, it's fair to ban them for posting unconstructive spam. For instance, it doesn't appear as though the guy in the article was making a substantive argument. He was just harassing a stranger.

Thats what he gets for being gay

this i can agree with, but what about those liberal spammers? so many liberal people spam "hateful people" as a "movement," yet they almost never recieve bans.

that's harassment and they should be banned too. a lot of people incorrectly think something wrong can be justice if they think they're fighting some evil, but all it means is that now you're a jerk too. i don't think that's an ideological thing, but it's something i guess you usually see in the context of sketchy radical communities

i guess it's not much different from people who obsessively sling insults and negativity at particular content creators like youtubers or similar people.

This is censorship of free speech.

Isn't Anita Sarkeesian running twitter?

Can't wait for a better site so Twitter can die off

Can't wait for a better site so Twitter can die off
i doubt that will happen
but who knows, maybe twitter will be the next myspace

just report every promoted @safety tweet as offensive when they show up on the mobile app

that'll show them!

Anita Sarkeesian will kill off twitter, don't worry.

The only thing that will kill off twitter is if they somehow make it inconvenient to browse and create content. Looks like they're starting on that path but don't hold your breath

Twitter has become tumblr.

I'd say that's not true, tumblr, as far as I know, doesn't randomly draw lines in the sand over who is and isn't allowed

Twitter has become tumblr.
tumblr is more like safe space haven with little cliques for everything imaginable.
twitter is youtube's comment section only you get subscribers by following the herd.

milo is an ass but this was unjustified
