Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday announced a three-month state of emergency to enable the authorities to take swift and effective action against those responsible for last weekend's failed military coup.

Erdogan, who has launched mass purges of state institutions that have effected some 60,000 individuals since the July 15 coup attempt, said the move was fully in line with Turkey's constitution and did not violate the rule of law or basic freedoms of Turkish citizens.
Turkey’s counter-measures have already effected more than 50,000 people — judges, civil servants, military, police and others — as the country’s leaders seek to root out opponents and perceived internal dissent.
More than 50,000 state employees have been rounded up, sacked or suspended in the days since the coup attempt.On Wednesday, 99 top military officers were charged in connection with the events of the weekend.
