That is the maximum, but it can be smaller and can be taller or wider in dimensions.

And for some reason, it seems to require transparency somewhere in the image. For hours on end, for several days in a row, I could NOT get my icon to upload when it was just the attached image, but then somehow I miraculously had the brilliant loving idea to erase the corners to turn the square into an octagon, then it magically was able to upload.

I think I took that step beforehand, since my old icon was a .png, but doing that alone didn't help. It was after the image type change that I tried the transparency. I think that's how it happened... but I'm not sure. I was getting extremely pissed off when that was going on.
