I think I took that step beforehand, since my old icon was a .png, but doing that alone didn't help. It was after the image type change that I tried the transparency. I think that's how it happened... but I'm not sure. I was getting extremely pissed off when that was going on.

iirc the forums is really picky about metadata or smth like that and oftentimes re-saving the image can fix it
