although a bit late in addressing this, china's defense minister called for preparations to improve off shore security and bolster the navy in the event of a "people's war at sea," obviously referencing the ongoing debacle in the south china sea between china and every other country in the area.

in july, the philippines took beijing to court over the disputed islands and ultimately won UN favor in declaring that china had no business to continue bullying its neighbors. china defied that resolution and is continuing to not only bully its neighbors, but build more artificial islands.

the united states has been posturing in the sea to protect maritime law there, as well as the $5 trillion that moves through it annually and the ~100 billion barrels (chinese estimate) of oil and 700 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that lie between its boundaries. the united states has also started stationing additional troops in the philippines as well as constructing more bases.

china and russia are to hold military exercises this september, but not to flex against third party, they claim. I think it's fairly obvious who they're flexing against and why they're doing it, but for the chinese to shift away from the US and back to russia is nothing short of worrying.

china is determined to not be the one to initiate war. if the US wants to stop them from encroaching on the islands, they'll have to take the initiative. this will, in turn, fill the 1.3 billion chinese with a resolve that the US will not be able to quell without extreme sacrifice.

Are we finally loving up N Korea

China has like... Barely a navy at all. Its not even an issue.

Their navy might be small, but their presence over the South China Sea and their large air-force makes up for that. Albeit their air-force is about 30 years behind the US and it's allies.

North K is nothing, but we'd be idiots to underestimate China. Even more so if Russia joins along.

There's been like tens on tens of articles like these about how X country is going to escalate Y issue into conflict but this stuff like never happens.

WW3 won't be physical arms, it's already going on as cyber warfare.  Nobody wants to lose face or military means when you can just hack each other without the public knowing, without official declarations, and without any rules of engagement for cyber war.

yea lmao everyone's lining up to take on the biggest military in the world (by far)

Until the day someone gets pissed enough to actually do something.

Until the day someone gets pissed enough to actually do something.

And then the rest of the world demonizes them, calls them out for acting brutish, everyone puts out economic sanctions on them to make themselves look better and whatever leader that was dumb enough to act out starts to get paranoid and isolationist, then some stuffty civil war happens for the next two billion years and everyone sorta just stops caring about it
