Author Topic: remind me: what are filesize limits for avatar?  (Read 1100 times)

there's a couple gifs i want to use as my avatar (or at least post in the free avatars megathread), but i can't use them because they're too large.

examples:

71.5kb

68.4kb

what's the max filesize? 50kb?

because if so, i'm not sure how much i'm gonna be able to compress some of these before they look like dogstuff

if its ten gigs then you gotta resort to making the gifs 30 fps

'ten gigs'

I tried reducing the amount of colors and it didn't change much
I guess you could try reducing the fps but I think you'd have to reduce it quite a lot to get right down to 10kb

I remember Peejster had an avatar that lasted about 5 minutes in length.

10kb and lower
avatar should be 75x75

ITT: People not knowing what the actual limit is

We don't know the exact limit because it doesn't tell us, but, we know that it's definitely quite large because you can put in a several minute gif. If your avatar doesn't upload right it's not because of filesize.

what
it tells me anything above 10 kb is too big, ip, wtf are you talking about

the limit is not 10kb

then what's the reason behind my adorable justin timberlake gif not working?

SMF has a really, really stupid, hush-hush super secret way of checking if an image file is "valid." This really stupid method has an absolutely ridiculous false-negative rate of like 75%. You literally just have to brute-force try different random stuff until it works.

that's loving lame
well, thanks for the hint, I guess -- i'm happy with my cat gif anyways

i'm pretty sure I've set avatars that were like 30kb before and I've also failed to set them at like 4kb. I'm pretty sure the forum has a weird method of checking if the file is ok that isn't entirely based on size
