I'm pretty sure Apple makes a decent profit off of selling products in the EU and losing that market is certainly not something that they would take lightly...?

You watch.
Either Apple doesn't pay and there's an international lawsuit, resulting in a settlement, or Apple will pay up and lay off stuffton of workers, particularly in Ireland and the rest of the EU.

Wait so you believe the EU would just ban apple completely?

The first part of that quote was a joke at tony the second bit is my response to the situation in general
I highly doubt the EU would suddenly rip all of its citizens phones from their hands and ban apples products lol

God I'm so torn

On one hand if Apple pays then the the EU gets an assload of money

On the other hand if Apple doesn't pay then they'd piss off a lot of people which could lead to worse stuff down the road

I'm confused as to why this causes you to be torn. Pissing off people is negative, the EU getting money is neutral-to-positive (depending on where you live and your opinion of the EU).

I don't understand why Apple would be responsible for paying that money. Ireland made a deal with them so that they wouldn't have to pay that money, and then the EU told them to anyway. It's not Apple's fault that Daddy EU decided that Ireland's deal was wrong. If anything, they should just have to pay normal taxes from this point forward.

Furthermore, by current metrics apple has somewhere between 15 and 20 billion in cash and $50 billion in debt. So, I think it's safe to say that if they legitimately had *extra cash* they would pay their debt, so they probably need that much money to operate properly.

This. I feel like all the discussion so far has generally overlooked the actual story and that that Apple was adhering to law of the local jurisdiction, not evading taxes. The EU disagreed with Ireland, and Apple gets the punishment for it.

apple CEO tim cook has published an open letter saying that he's confident the EU will reverse its demand. he feels that the united states and ireland will support the company in stopping the EU from collecting
