Author Topic: Gun Freedums: Do they really matter that much?  (Read 3335 times)

I was thinking to myself the other day; is open/concealed carry really that bad? I've always been anti-gun, but then I thought... wait... if so many people around have guns at once, won't it be harder for someone to start open firing without being shot by someone else immediately? I'm starting to feel sort of indifferent on whether or not gun laws change, honestly. Discuss.

In australia everyone has guns on them at all times and look how few shootings we have

Well, to my point of view, having weapons would just tense up those kinds of situations instead of avoiding them. For example, if you tried to rob someone with a weapon and everyone pulls out their weapon, the slightest pop be it from a gunshot or a falling item or even a gasket blown from a vehicle could cause everyone to begin firing.

I'm a supporter of open and concealed carry and I don't mind at all when I see a single person with a pistol but I'd be uneasy in a room filled with armed strangers.

we need to control these weapons of mass destruction

no
edit: oh you mean the other way around
yes

I recall the statistic being that guns are used to kill ~30 people on average per day in the US, and guns are used in self defensive scenarios ~177 times on average per day in the US.

Of course the issue doesn't really lie with "justifiable homicides" as much as it does implementing gun control in the #1 arms manufacturing country where there are more guns on the street than there are people. Realistically what's going to happen after you manage to magically evaporate the guns out of the hands of criminals is that you're still going to get people killing each other in impoverish communities with knives instead of guns at the price of disarming a bunch of people who use weapons to defend themselves against violent crime and loveual assault.

If you want to reduce gun violence, start with building schools in poor neighborhoods.

I only think gun rights matter because I am a fan of having little government control. That and they're really fun to shoot recreationally. If you've never fired a gun before you're really missing out.

But I don't really care that much about gun rights for their own sakes.

I think certain states should have restrictions on firearms, like CA, MA, NY and other populated areas. Places where there's less people and less chance for someone to get all trigger happy should have open carry

This way, all the second amendment nuts can shoot themselves up in their own secluded states while us civilized people live our safe, gun-free lives.

^ yeah just look at chicago

OT: "an armed society is a polite society" is a saying for a reason

I really don't see the need for guns as security (unless if you're in the military or police, sure). I can totally understand that people want to hunt or shoot recreationally, and I'm fine with that, but I just think the idea that you don't feel safe without a pistol or a rifle in your house (and especially if you're conceal/open-carrying in a public place) is a bit ridiculous, especially given that there are plenty of ways to make a house unattractive to burglars and simply not acting like an idiot is a sure-fire way to not piss most people off.

Yeah, the bad guys will always find a way to get guns illegally, but that's because they're criminals. They make it their livelihoods to find ways to exploit the system. Really, unless you live in a loving stuffty area, you're probably more likely to have your bank account hacked or your wallet pinched.

Straight up gun control (ala Australia) isn't the right answer for America, but at some point the system is gonna have to change. One can only hope that it'll be for the better. I personally enjoy living in Australia where the only people with guns are the cops and robbers who frankly don't have much reason to pick on me.

its either start getting rid of guns or give every single citizen a gun usage program with a complementary gun as open/concealed

we do this extreme

No, they don't.
Either opinion you have on it, it affects the world so little. We need to focus on the important stuff like climate change instead of petty crap like this and that transgender bathroom thing a while ago.

While we're on the topic though, I agree with this. I would also like to add that you don't need a firearm to shoot recreationally - a hunting bow, airsoft gun, or BB gun will do. Additionally, while planned crimes might not be affected by gun laws, impulse crimes will be.

In reality, the system is fine now. Breaking the second amendment sets a dangerous precedent - our first amendment rights are already bad enough (see: Snowden).

Next year I'm planning on getting a concealed carry license and firearm. I'm not the paranoid type to think that there's someone out there to get me, I'd just rather be armed in the unlikely scenario that my life is being threatened. I don't expect my life to be threatened and I sure as forget hope I never have to draw a firearm, but I would prefer the option to defend myself if necessary.

Gun violence is a problem because violence is a problem. The existence of firearms may not directly influence the amount of violence and Rally is pretty much correct in that you take away the guns and those who commit violent acts will use anything else at their disposal to continue committing violent acts.

More comprehensive measures like actively trying to prevent firearms from being accessible to those with mental disorders, educating minors on proper firearm safety and requiring a minimum amount of training before issuing licenses may help curb gun violence even further. Along with that, Self Deletes make up a staggering part of annual gun violence. At some point in time the US needs to address it's appalling mistreatment of mental disorders.

If I had a daily concealed carry I'd probably just get a little .380 and get a case that makes it less obvious.
