People will get mad and angry at you for any reason they shall find for themselves in order to be angry. No matter what course of action, you will be hated by some few or by many. There is no difference just as we will all die, all will be hated in some way.
What to do about being a better person, you have to realize other people hurt other people because they are hurt themselves. If you still treat them with respect/kindness then they may apologize and you would break their cycle of pain (temporarily). However some are so far gone they find reasons to be hurt. Whether or not a person will be a repeat-offender with being mean, it is still better to not allow the cycle of hurt to continue.
On your motivation to try to be better because you received hate, you need to realize that you are not obligated to be treated well. You don't deserve it nor do you deserve pain. It is simply just there good or bad.
