what would his owning a gun change about his opinion
I'd imagine whether or not you had guns in the home growing up has a big impact on opinion.
I don't personally own a gun because I'm not of age to purchase one in my state, but I was brought up around guns, we had them around for as long as I could remember. Almost all of my extended family owns guns, even though it's not very common in my area relative to other states.
Editing because I just thought of something interesting:
I've had a few discussions with some people at my uni, and I live in a fairly liberal state, so as expected, most of them lean varying degrees of left. The topic of the second amendment inevitably came up, and I asked how many of them have personally been to a range, private or otherwise, and learned about guns and shot ANY kind of gun. Absolutely none of them have.
It's fairly anecdotal but it was eye-opening for me, as I think that the formative younger years might have a lot to do with someone's perception of guns.
If your only contact with a gun is watching Stallone movies and watching Rambo mow down cops with a machine gun, your opinion obviously might be a little different than someone that spent summer afternoons plinking on a family friend's farm.
